I have read so many statements of people who have shed their values or beliefs and exclaimed something like "I have never felt so liberated in my life!" You hear the same thing whether someone sheds their belief in their faith, decides to pose nude for a porn peddler, or in some other way rejects values of decency and morality.
I just wish that people could understand that just because they feel some sense of liberation at a particular moment after they take a particular course of action, it does not follow that they are becoming more liberated. In fact, they may well be becoming more and more captivated.
The classic example of this basking in new-found perceived freedom and liberation is as old as civilzation. After Cain killed his brother, he exulted by uttering "I am free!" How ironic, that that is essentially the same line exclaimed so often now and with such exuberance by so many after a particular person takes a particular course of action which is contrary to what they were taught ever since they were young.
